5 ways to support your pregnancy using tradition and modern care

Pregnancy is a time of incredible change — physically, emotionally, and spiritually. As your body adapts to support new life, it deserves care that’s both nourishing and mindful. For generations, South Asian traditions have offered gentle, natural ways to support expecting mothers — from calming rituals and nutrient-rich foods to self-care practices that promote balance and comfort. Today, blending these timeless traditions with modern wellness can help you feel your best through every trimester. In this post, we share five ways to support your pregnancy naturally — combining the wisdom of tradition with the ease of modern care.
1. Daily Abhyanga
Abhyanga is a traditional Ayurvedic full body oil massage and it is widely practiced just in everyday life. It especially is encouraged during preganancy (second and third trimesters) and post-partum however because it helps support circulation, promote relaxation, and relieve muscle and joint aches and pains. It’s also just a really great practice to make you feel taken care off and taking those few minutes in your day to do something just for you- this practice feels like a hug to me. Tip- if you are short on time, focus on your legs and feet as these tend to get very achy as you get more into your pregnancy.
2. Saffron milk
This is one of those practices that was passed down my mother during my first pregnancy and it was passed down to her by her mother. Saffron has gained a lot of popularity here over the last couple of years and rightly so- it has a wide range of benefits from inside to outside the body. It helps calm the mind, support sleep, and make your skin glow. Adding this to milk and a pinch of turmeric at night is anti-inflammatory and can help promote a good night sleep. Note: Saffron is potent and should be consumed after the first trimester. Please speak to your doctor about consuming it if you have any concerns.
3. Pelvic floor therapy
PFT may not be South Asian tradition but its definitely modern care that every expectant and post -partum women should explore. After experiencing a tough post- partum period with my first, pelvic floor therapy to help strengthen and relax the pelvic floor was one of the most healing things I did, For my second, I knew right away that starting early was going to be key to making sure post partum healing this time around was smoother and help me feel stronger giving birth this time around.
4. Infused waters
Hydration is key while pregnant but drinking just water can get hard. I love incorporating other seeds and herbs into my water to give it a different taste but also to super charge the water. For extra hydration, I like to add coriander seeds to my water and to support digestion, I like Fennel or Cumin. Electrolytes are also key here to keep those leg cramps at bay so make sure you’re getting enough electrolytes!
5. Prenatal yoga
Pregnancy is taxing on the body so gentle stretches and yoga positions that help maintain flexibility and ultimately support labor is the goal. Ayurveda encourages gentle stretching and breathing exercises while pregnant to support your growing body, the muscles and joints stretching to make way for your growing child. Similar to Pelvic Floor Therapy, prenatal yoga focuses alot of strengthening and relaxing the pelvic floor to prepare for birth. Its seen as a holistic practice to support mother and baby.
As a mom who’s been through this journey, I’ve learned that there’s no one “right” way to care for yourself during pregnancy. What matters most is finding what works for you — whether that’s leaning into traditional practices that feel familiar or embracing modern practices that make you feel better The mix of both is what helped me feel supported through all the changes. So take what resonates, leave what doesn’t, and give yourself grace along the way.
