Cultural Significance
Baby massage or bal maalish holds deep cultural, emotional, and health-related significance in South Asian traditions. It’s much more than just a wellness practice—it's a centuries-old ritual passed down through generations in the deepest form of showing community care. Typically grandmothers or experienced female elders perform the baby massage in the morning before a bath. It’s a way of passing on tradition and care. It’s believed to be an act of ritual purity and cleansing and grounding baby earthside in addition to creating a deep bond between the baby and their caretakers and helping to strengthen their little bodies.
