Baby Skin Care 101: Building the Routine

We have heard it time and time again that a baby's skin is the most delicate.

It requires care but that does not mean a 12 step routine. Baby care should be simple and focus on supporting and strengthening their skin barrier. Traditional method in South Asian homes usually include oils, cleansing powders made from chickpea flour, turmeric, and milk, brief warm baths, and breathable clothing. Its not always easy to follow the same methods today but the essence remains- the simpler the better.

Why is Simple Better?

A newborn's skin is still developing. The skin barrier — the protective layer that keeps moisture in and irritants out — is thinner and more permeable than adult skin, according to pediatric dermatologists. This means that what you put on your baby's skin matters enormously, and that less is genuinely more.

Overloading delicate skin with unnecessary products, fragrances, or harsh cleansers can disrupt this barrier rather than support it. The best approach is one that works with your baby's skin, not against it.

What do babies actually need?

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, skincare should be kept simple. We prefer a gentle cleanser, lotion, oil or balm, and a diaper cream. It does not need to be any more complex than this.

Step 1: Gentle Cleanser

A fragrance-free, sulfate-free wash that cleanses without stripping the skin's natural oils. Look for pH-balanced formulas specifically made for baby or sensitive skin.

Step 2: Lotion

A lightweight, non-greasy moisturizer to hydrate and reinforce the skin barrier after bath time. Apply while skin is still slightly damp for best absorption. Stick to fragrance free versions.

Step 3: Oil or Balm

A nourishing oil or balm for extra protection on dry patches, cheeks, or areas prone to irritation. These are also occlusive meaning they seal in hydration within the skin without directly hydrating themselves. Find oils that contain skin nourishing benefits, made without mineral oil, and fragrance free. Our Shanta Baby Oil is formulated with oils like Sesame Seed oil ( also known as the "king of oils" in Ayurveda), Sweet Almond Oil, and infused with Brahmi and Ashwagandha.

Tips for Building A Routine

Always patch test new products

Even if a product is made for babies or for sensitive skin, we always recommend patch testing before using a product all over. Every baby is different and what works for one baby does not always mean it will work for the other.

Massage pre-bath

A quick massage before a bath is a traditional South Asian and Ayurvedic practice. It is believed that this ritual helps to support the skin from drying out from hot water and cleansers but it is also done as a way to help support the body for sleep.

Bathe as needed

Babies do not need baths every day but if you prefer to give on every day, don't use cleanser everyday- just water works as well. When you do use cleanser, focus on the parts where dirt can get trapped like in the skin folds around the neck, arms, and thighs.

Moisturize after bath

Apply a lotion right after bath while the skin is still damp to help with absorption. Add in a few drops of a baby oil to help lock in the hydration.

Keep it consistent

Find the products that work and stick with them consistently to help ensure you don't irritate your baby's skin and help to strengthen that barrier.

Taking care of your baby shouldn't feel overwhelming and the products should not either. Remember to keep it simple, consistent, and the best routine is the one you can stick with.
