4 ways to keep your toddler's dry skin away this winter

As the weather turns colder, many parents notice their little one’s skin becoming dry, flaky, or even red and irritated. My son’s skin tends to do the same as soon as the temperature starts to drop and we are constantly under heat sources, and over time, I’ve learned that keeping baby skin soft and hydrated takes more than just slathering on lotion and keep the skin covered. It’s about creating a consistent, nourishing routine — one that protects and soothes from the outside in and inside out.

Here are four natural ways to relieve your baby’s dry skin, inspired by both modern skincare science and timeless Ayurvedic rituals.

1. Add a Balm or Heavy Emollient to Your Baby’s Skincare Routine

One of the best ways to protect baby skin from dryness is by sealing in moisture with a baby balm or heavy emollient. A rich, oil-based balm helps create a protective barrier that locks in hydration after bath time. It also calms irritation and soothes dry patches on cheeks, elbows, and knees.

Apply the balm while your baby’s skin is still slightly damp to maximize absorption. Look for natural, plant-based ingredients — like coconut oil, shea butter, or calendula — that deeply nourish sensitive skin without clogging pores.

2. Incorporate Warm Oil Massages

An age-old Ayurvedic practice, warm oil massages (abhyanga) are one of my favorite ways to care for my son’s skin — especially in the winter. We double down on oil massages before baths to help strengthen the skin barrier and act as a shield between his skin and soapy water.

Using a baby-safe oil warmed between your palms, gently massage in slow, circular motions. Not only does this deeply hydrate the skin, but it also improves circulation, supports relaxation, and strengthens your baby’s muscles and bones. It’s a soothing ritual that connects you and your baby while promoting healthy, glowing skin.

3. Use Mild Soaps and Limit “Bubble Baths”

While bubble baths are fun, most foaming soaps and body washes can strip away natural oils, leaving your baby’s skin feeling tight or irritated. Instead, opt for mild, fragrance-free soaps or Ayurvedic baby washes that cleanse gently without drying.

During winter, you can even skip soap some days — just a gentle rinse and following up with lotion and balm can help their skin stay hydrated and nourished without stripping it.

4. Nourish from the Inside Out

Healthy skin starts from within. Along with topical care, focus on nourishing foods that support your child’s skin barrier. If your little one is eating solids, offer foods rich in good fats and antioxidants — like avocados, ghee, and lentils.  For toddlers, warm milk with a touch of turmeric is a wonderful Ayurvedic staple to support overall wellness.

Dry skin is common during seasonal changes, but with these natural baby dry skin remedies, your little one’s skin can stay soft, soothed, and comfortable all winter long. From traditional warm oil massages to rich baby balms that lock in moisture, each small step helps nourish your baby’s delicate skin the way nature intended.
