South Asian Home Remedies for Common Baby Discomforts

For generations, South Asian mothers and grandmothers have turned to gentle, time-tested remedies to soothe their babies' everyday discomforts. These traditional practices—passed down through our grāmah (village)—offer natural relief rooted in Ayurvedic wisdom and cultural knowledge.
Here are the remedies our ancestors trusted, and how you can use them for your little one today.

Gas and Tummy Troubles

Few things are more distressing than watching your baby struggle with gas pain. Traditional South Asian remedies focus on warmth, gentle movement, and digestive support:

Hing (Asafoetida) Paste
Mix a tiny pinch of hing with water to create a paste, warm it slightly, and gently massage it around your baby's navel in clockwise circles. This age-old remedy helps release trapped gas and soothes digestive discomfort.

Tummy Massage with Traditional Ingredients
Warm oil massage combined with digestive-supporting ingredients is a cornerstone of South Asian baby care. Grāmah Baby's Tummy Roll-On makes this traditional practice effortless—it's formulated with hing and other Ayurvedic ingredients specifically to help fussy babies find relief from gas and tummy discomfort. Simply roll it gently around your baby's navel in clockwise circles.

Ajwain (Carom Seeds) Water
Boil a teaspoon of ajwain seeds in water, strain, and let it cool to room temperature. A few drops can help ease gas and colic. (Always consult your pediatrician before introducing new remedies, especially for young infants.)

Bicycle Legs
Lay your baby on their back and gently move their legs in a bicycling motion. This simple movement helps release trapped gas naturally.

Cold and Congestion

When your baby has a stuffy nose or mild cold, these gentle remedies can provide comfort:

Steam Therapy
Run a hot shower and sit with your baby in the steamy bathroom (not directly under the water). The warm, moist air helps loosen congestion and makes breathing easier.

Ajwain Potli (Seed Pouch)
Dry roast ajwain seeds, wrap them in a soft cloth, and gently place the warm (not hot!) pouch on your baby's chest or back. The aromatic warmth helps clear congestion and provides comfort.

Breast Milk Drops
A drop or two of breast milk in each nostril can help clear nasal passages. Breast milk contains natural antibodies and is completely safe for babies.

Elevated Sleep
Slightly elevate the head of your baby's crib or bassinet (never use pillows directly) to help mucus drain and make breathing easier during sleep.

Dry Skin

Babies' delicate skin needs extra moisture, especially in dry or cold weather. Try:

Daily Abhyanga (Oil Massage)
The cornerstone of Ayurvedic baby care is daily oil massage. Warm oil massage before bath time locks in moisture, nourishes the skin, and calms your baby's nervous system. Use natural, cold-pressed oils formulated for babies—like Grāmah Baby's Shanta Baby Oil—to ensure safety and effectiveness.

Malai (Milk Cream) Treatment
Fresh malai from boiled milk can be gently applied to dry patches. This traditional moisturizer is rich in natural fats that nourish and protect delicate skin.

Besan (Chickpea Flour) Bath
Add a small amount of besan to your baby's bath water instead of soap. It gently cleanses without stripping natural oils, leaving skin soft and moisturized.

Honoring Ancestral Wisdom

These remedies have comforted countless babies across generations. While modern medicine has its place, these gentle, natural approaches offer safe relief for everyday discomforts—connecting us to the wisdom of our mothers and grandmothers.
